When Johnnie and Jared decided to take their engagement photos, they wanted somewhere special, somewhere that would reflect the beauty of their love. They found the perfect spot: Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park.

Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park is a hidden gem nestled in Northern California. The park features some of the tallest trees in the world, creating a breathtaking backdrop for any photoshoot. But for Johnnie and Jared, it was more than just the scenery; it was about capturing the essence of their relationship in a place that truly felt magical.

Exploring The Redwoods

From the moment you step into the Redwoods State Park, you’re greeted by MASSIVE trees that almost could touch the sky. These ancient trees have been around for thousands of years, and being in them feels like stepping into another world. The park is covered with trails and paths, each offering unique views and experiences.

For their Redwoods engagement photos, Johnnie and Jared explored some of the park’s most picturesque trails. They adventured down a few trails and every spot is surrounded with lush, green ferns and shaded by the redwoods. The soft light coming through the trees added a dreamy quality to their photos. They also explored and found some Redwood trees that had fallen over. They walked across them together and it was like a scene from a movie.

Why You Should Take Photos in the Redwoods

The Redwoods offer a unique backdrop that you simply can’t find anywhere else. Their sheer size and the serene environment they create make for stunning photos that are both timeless and magical. Here are a few reasons why you should consider the Redwoods for your photoshoot:

1. Natural Beauty

The Redwoods are naturally beautiful. The tall trees, lush ferns, and sunlight create a moody and surreal atmosphere. This natural beauty enhances any photoshoot, making your pictures look like they belong in a storybook.

2. Unique Setting

There are many beautiful places in the world, but the Redwoods are truly unique. Their height and age give them an almost otherworldly quality, making your photos stand out from anything else.

For an even bigger moment I would recommend eloping in the Redwoods. Check out my Luxury Redwoods California Elopement blog for all the info how!

3. Versatile Spots

Within the Redwoods, you’ll find a variety of spots perfect for photos. From the dense forest to the clear rivers and streams, there’s no shortage of beautiful backdrops to choose from. Each area offers something different, allowing for a diverse set of photos.

4. Peace and Quiet

The Redwoods provide a peaceful and quiet setting, making it easier to relax and enjoy the moment. This calm atmosphere helps you feel more comfortable in front of the camera, leading to more natural and genuine photos.

Other Things to Know

If you’re planning an engagement photoshoot in the Redwoods, there are a few things you should keep in mind to ensure everything goes smoothly.

Permits and Permissions

Some areas of the park may require permits for professional photography. It’s important to check with the park authorities beforehand and obtain any necessary permissions. This will help avoid any interruptions during your photoshoot. Your photographer should be familiar with this process if they are used to shooting in the Redwoods (like myself!)

Weather Considerations

The weather in the Redwoods can be unpredictable. Even in the summer, it can be cool and foggy in the mornings and evenings. Be sure to dress in layers and bring along extra clothing to stay comfortable throughout the shoot.

Timing

The best time for photos in the Redwoods is usually late morning or afternoon when the light is soft and at its highest. This light adds a warm and romantic glow to your photos since it brings in enough light through the trees. Golden hour during sunrise and sunset will be extremely dark in the forest, so it’s best to avoid this time if possible.

Preparation

Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on uneven terrain. The trails can be muddy, especially after rain, so it’s a good idea to bring a change of shoes in case you need them. Also, pack some snacks and water to keep your energy up during the shoot.

Respect Nature

The Redwoods are a delicate ecosystem. Be sure to respect the environment by staying on designated trails and not disturbing the wildlife. Leave no trace of your visit, taking only memories and photos with you.
