Are you dreaming of a romantic, intimate wedding surrounded by nature’s beauty? Eloping at Cathedral Rock in Sedona, Arizona, might be the perfect choice for you. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to plan your special day at this iconic location in 2025.

About Cathedral Rock

Cathedral Rock is one of Sedona’s most famous landmarks, known for its stunning red rock formations and breathtaking views. To reach the top, you’ll need to take a short but steep hike that promises an unforgettable experience.

Trail Details

The trail to Cathedral Rock is 1.2 miles round trip, which may sound short, but it comes with a moderate to difficult challenge due to an elevation gain of approximately 744 feet. The hike usually takes about 1 to 2 hours depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the views or take photos.

Tips for the Hike

When planning your hike, it’s important to wear sturdy shoes because the trail can be steep and rocky. Bringing water is essential to stay hydrated, especially if you’re hiking in the warmer months. Starting early in the morning is a great way to beat both the heat and the crowds, offering you a quiet experience as you hike.

Permits

Before you plan your elopement at Cathedral Rock, you’ll need a few permits to make sure everything goes smoothly.

Wedding Permits

A Special Use Permit is required for any wedding ceremony on public lands, which includes Cathedral Rock. You can obtain this permit by contacting the Coconino National Forest Service. The cost for this permit typically ranges from $100 to $200, so make sure you budget for this in your planning. Remember to always book well in advance to guarantee your date! Permits can range significantly depending on the type of celebration you plan on having! Always check with your photographer to make sure you are keeping things legal!

Parking Permits

To park at the Cathedral Rock trailhead, you’ll need a Red Rock Pass. This pass costs $5 per day or $15 per week, and you can purchase it at local stores in Sedona or online before your trip. Having this pass ensures you can park legally and avoid any hassles on your special day.

Best Time to Elope

Choosing the right time of year can make a big difference in your elopement experience at Cathedral Rock.

Ideal Seasons

Spring, from March to May, offers the most comfortable temperatures, making it a unique time for an elopement. Fall, from September to November, also has some amazing weather, creating a stunning atmosphere.

Times To Avoid

It’s best to avoid the summer months because the heat can be intense, turning your hike into a challenging workout rather than a romantic adventure. Additionally, holidays tend to bring crowds, making it difficult to find a quiet spot for your ceremony. If you wish to elope in the summer I suggest a sunrise elopement!

Year-Round Weather in Sedona

Understanding the weather in Sedona can help you plan your elopement for optimal comfort and beauty.

  • Winter (December to February): Cooler temperatures, averaging 30-60°F. Snow is rare but possible.
  • Spring (March to May): Mild and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 50-80°F.
  • Summer (June to August): Hot, with temperatures soaring between 70-100°F. Afternoon thunderstorms are common.
  • Fall (September to November): Cool and comfortable, with temperatures from 50-80°F, ideal for outdoor activities.

How to Avoid Crowds

Cathedral Rock is a popular destination, but with a few tricks, you can find a private moment for your ceremony. Consider eloping on a weekday rather than a weekend, as this significantly reduces the number of tourists. Eloping in the early morning or late afternoon not only avoids crowds but also provides stunning light for photos. Additionally, eloping in off-peak months like January or February can give you a more secluded experience.

What to Wear for Your Elopement

Choosing the right attire can enhance your comfort and the overall feel of your elopement.

  • Brides: Consider a lightweight dress that allows ease of movement, especially if you’re hiking.
  • Grooms: A casual suit or dress shirt with slacks can provide a great look while keeping you comfortable.
  • Footwear: Both should choose to bring sturdy but stylish shoes that can handle rocky terrain. You can always bring your elopement shoes with you and change when you get to the site!
  • Layers: Bring a jacket for cooler times of the day.

Choosing Vendors

Selecting the right vendors can make your elopement smooth and special!

Finding the Right Photographer

Capturing your day is crucial. Look for a photographer experienced with outdoor weddings. Check their portfolio to ensure their style matches your vision. I always recommend choosing a photographer that is experienced with Cathedral Rock (like myself!)

Other Vendors

Consider hiring a local officiant who knows the area well. A florist for a bouquet that complements the natural beauty is also a great addition. If you want a bit more convenience, look for hairstylists or makeup artists who can come to you.

Creating a Timeline

A timeline helps ensure everything goes off without any inconveniences. I always customize my clients timelines to be special to their day. A very rough outline for a sunrise elopement would include:

  • Early EARLY Morning: Begin with getting ready photos.
  • Early Morning: Travel and hike to your ceremony spot.
  • Sunrise: Have your ceremony at golden hour.
  • Mid-Morning: Explore, take more photos.
  • Noon: Celebrate with a picnic or small meal.
  • Evening: Capture sunset photos for a perfect end to the day.

Incorporating Personal Touches

Make your elopement truly yours by adding personal elements. Write your own vows together at a different location in the area to read later on in the day. You can also plan a unique activity after the ceremony, like exploring more of Sedona’s trails or having a romantic dinner under the stars. If you are wanting family or friends to join your elopement, consider having a micro wedding!
