Okay, we’ve got to talk about elopements. I mean, what’s better than traveling with your soulmate to say “I do” somewhere magical and intimate? A small elopement wedding is honestly where it’s at. No stress about seating charts or feeding 200 people you barely know. Instead, it’s filled with personal moments, and a day that’s truly about your love story. If you’re thinking about planning an elopement in 2025, buckle up because I’ve got everything you need right here. From picking the perfect spot to including your fam, here’s how to plan a small elopement wedding.

Step 1: Decide What Kind of Elopement You Want

First, you’ve gotta decide what kind of elopement you’re dreaming of. Just because it’s small doesn’t mean it’s less special, so think about your vibe. Are you picturing a wild outdoor adventure on top of a mountain? Or maybe something sweet and simple in a cozy Airbnb? Elopements can be free-spirited, elegant, or even a mix of everything. It’s your day! Write down your must-haves, whether that’s hiking to the ceremony or wearing a killer designer gown while barefoot in a forest.

Step 2: Choose the Perfect Location

Location sets the whole mood, so this is a big deal. If you’re into the mountains, check out places like Breckenridge, Colorado. It’s perfect with its mix of snow-capped peaks, pine trees, and dreamy sunsets. Another amazing spot? The Grand Teton National Park. It’s straight out of a postcard! Oh, and don’t forget coastal cliffs, desert landscapes, or even a rooftop with city views. Make sure to think about logistics, though. If you’re planning to hike to your spot, wear shoes you can actually walk in, you can change into those heels later!

For small wedding inspiration check out my Intimate Breckenridge Airbnb Wedding blog. Kennedy and Paetan rented out a STUNNING Airbnb for their wedding. I also captured a Sunny Summer Mountain View Turnout Wedding in the Grand Tetons. This wedding was so beautiful and surrounded by nature.

Amazing Outdoor Elopement Locations to Check Out

If you’re still on the hunt for that perfect backdrop, here are some more killer outdoor spots to inspire you:

  • Redwood Forest: Iconic redwood trees, forests, and incredible views for a dramatic “wow” factor.
  • Oregon Coast: Rugged coastal vibes with cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Epic doesn’t even cover it.
  • Sedona, Arizona: Red rock formations and desert landscapes for that warm, earthy aesthetic.
  • Mt. Rainier National Park, Washington: Moody forests, pristine lakes, and misty mountain views hit all the right romantic notes.
  • Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee/North Carolina: Stunning layers of misty mountains make this a dream for nature-loving couples.
  • Kauai, Hawaii: Picture a golden beach sunset or lush jungle vibes, because why not go tropical?

Each spot brings something unique, so find one that feels like you and make it your own!

Step 3: Figure Out the Legal Stuff

I know this part sounds boring, but it’s gotta happen. No one wants to accidentally forget the legal details. Every state has different marriage requirements, so do some research about where you’re getting hitched. For example, in Colorado, you can actually self-solemnize, meaning you don’t even need an officiant! But you’ll still need to apply for a marriage license, and don’t forget your IDs. Check the official county website where you’ll be filing to make sure you’re all set.

Step 4: Set Your Guest List (If You’re Having One)

Elopements used to mean “just you two,” but these days, couples are making their own rules. Want to include your closest family or besties? Amazing, go for it! A small group of 5-10 people can make your day even more special. Keep it intimate by inviting only the people who truly support your relationship. And if you don’t want anyone there, that’s totally fine too. Contacting them after the ceremony to share the big news can be just as sweet.

Step 5: Hire the Right Vendors

Just because it’s an elopement doesn’t mean it’s a DIY free-for-all. The right vendors will make your day run smoothly. At a minimum, consider hiring an experienced elopement photographer (like myself). Elopement photographers do more than snap pics. We help scout locations, create timelines, and even handle mood-setting details. If you’re writing your own vows, think about bringing in an officiant (unless you’re doing self-solemnization). Depending on your plans, a hairstylist, makeup artist, and florist can also add personal touches that’ll make your day feel complete.

Step 6: Plan the Ceremony (Make It You)

Your elopement ceremony can be whatever you want it to be. Seriously, whatever. Write your own vows if you’re feeling up for it. It’s such a raw and personal way to share your love story. Maybe bring a Bluetooth speaker for soft music in the background or a little rug to stand on if you’re getting married outdoors. If you’re including family, ask someone close to do a reading or blessing. Keep it authentic to who you are as a couple. And don’t stress, it doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful.

Step 7: Make It Gorgeous with Thoughtful Details

Details make a world of difference, even for small weddings. Think beautiful florals, dreamy lighting, or a handwritten letter exchange before the ceremony. Dress in something that makes you feel amazing, whether it’s a flowy boho dress, a sleek jumpsuit, or a classic suit. Pro tip: Don’t forget the weather! Layer up if it’ll be chilly or pack sunscreen and water if you’re outdoors in the summer.

Step 8: Include Family and Friends in Unique Ways

Even if you aren’t inviting everyone, there are still ways to involve the most important people in your life. You could host a small “celebration dinner” after the ceremony or later when you’re back home to share photos and videos. Ask close family or friends to write you heartfelt letters to read on the day. If your grandparents can’t hike to your ceremony spot, consider bringing a framed photo of them or wearing something meaningful, like your mom’s necklace. It’s the little things that matter.

Step 9: Celebrate Over Food and Drinks

You’ve just gotten married, now it’s time to party! Okay, so maybe there aren’t 100 people there, but who says you can’t have an incredible meal? Find a local restaurant near your elopement location and book a private table. Some couples even pack their own picnic to enjoy right after the ceremony. Imagine sipping champagne on a cliffside with just the two of you! Bring a mini cake (or cupcakes!) to cut, because you deserve that cute “cake moment,” no matter the size of the wedding. Some couples even hire a private chef to come and cook at their Airbnb!

Step 10: Capture YOU!

Honestly, the best investment for any small wedding or elopement is photography. This isn’t just about Instagram. Having stunning, professional photos preserves all the emotions and moments from the day for the rest of your lives. A skilled elopement photographer knows how to work with natural lighting, unpredictable weather, and unique locations to make sure you look your best. Look for a photographer who gets your vision, has experience with small, intimate weddings, and can help you create a timeline that feels stress-free.

Bonus Tip: Enjoy the Whole Experience

This is your reminder that your elopement is about you. Weddings can become so filled with other people’s opinions and expectations, but eloping gives you the freedom to celebrate your love without anyone else’s rules. Remember to breathe, soak in the little moments, and focus on each other. Trust me, you won’t remember if your hair got a little messy in the wind or if your dress got dirty from walking in the mountains. What will stick with you is the love and magic of the day.

Final Thoughts and Reminder

Planning a small elopement wedding might sound like a lot, but trust me you’ve got this. By taking it step by step, you can make your day everything you’ve dreamed of, minus the stress. Whether you’re saying “I do” in the gorgeous peaks of the Rocky Mountains, or at a dreamy overlook in the desert, or somewhere else that feels like home to you, make sure to do it your way. And when it comes to capturing every breathtaking, emotional, and authentic moment, I’d be so honored to be your photographer. Let’s make magic together.
