bride and groom taking photos for their sun point elopement

Golden light mixed with the bluest water and mountain views! This Sun Point elopement was everything I love about Glacier National Park.

Even though this shoot was for inspiration, the evening felt just as real and emotional as an actual elopement day. The couple read heartfelt vows to each other as the sun dipped behind the peaks, and we stayed until the light turned into blue hour!

A Sunset Elopement at Sun Point

Sun Point is one of those spots in Glacier that never gets old. It’s right along the shore of St. Mary Lake, with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and plenty of space to explore. Whether you’re standing near the cliffs or down by the water, every direction looks like a painting. And the water is truly so blue!!

We planned this elopement shoot for sunset, which turned out to be absolutely perfect. The sun soaked light poured through the mountains!

Jenny & Josh read their vows surrounded by the prettiest mountain views! Afterward, we ran around taking photos in that last bit of glow before the sun disappeared completely.

Why Sun Point is Perfect for Elopements

There are a lot of stunning spots in Glacier National Park, but Sun Point is easily one of my top choices for couples wanting that perfect mix of views, easy access, and light. Here’s why:

  • Epic mountain views without hiking: You don’t have to trek miles to get a backdrop that looks straight out of a postcard. It is a 5-10 minute walk to this spot so just something to keep in mind, when thinking ahead for guests!
  • Golden light at sunset: The way the sun hits St. Mary Lake here in the evening is unreal!
  • Variety of backdrops: Between the cliffs, lakeshore, and trail that winds along the lake, you can get so much visual variety within a short walk.
  • Quiet atmosphere: It’s easy to find a private area away from crowds, especially the more you walk down on the trail.

How to Get Married at Sun Point

If you’re dreaming of your own Sun Point elopement, here’s what you need to know about planning your ceremony there:

  • Get a Special Use Permit:
Glacier National Park requires a wedding or elopement permit for all ceremonies. You can apply directly through the National Park Service website. The process is simple and typically costs around $125. This spot does fill up early, so highly recommend not waiting on this process.
  • Group Size:
Sun Point allows smaller ceremonies (up 20 people total), making it perfect for intimate gatherings or just the two of you. Remember that your total guest count includes the two of you as well as your photographer and anyone else that you would hire and be present at your ceremony.
  • Timing:
The best time of year for a Sun Point elopement is early- Mid July through late September, when the Going-to-the-Sun Road is open and the area is accessible. Sunset here is unbeatable, but early mornings can be gorgeous too if you want soft light and privacy.
  • Leave No Trace: Glacier is a protected wilderness area, so everything you bring in must be packed out. Keeping the space clean helps preserve the park for future couples.

Don’t worry if permits or logistics sound confusing, I help all my couples with this part! From applying for your permit to crafting a stress-free timeline around lighting and travel, I’ll guide you through every step.

    Luxury in the Mountains

What I love most about this Sun Point elopement was how it blended luxury details with a natural, relaxed feel. The couple was up in modern, elevated attire! Truly their outfits belong on Pinterest!

That’s something I always tell couples: luxury doesn’t mean over-the-top! And I love when stunning dresses and wedding attire is brought into nature. Want to check out more Glacier Elopement Inspo: Check out my blog on a Logan Pass Elopement.

How I Help Couples Plan Their Glacier Elopement

As a Glacier National Park elopement photographer, I do more than just take photos. I help couples create a full experience that feels natural, meaningful, and well-planned. When you work with me, you’ll get:

    • Customized location guidance: I’ll help you choose the best spots for light, privacy, and views that match your vibe.
    • Timeline planning: So you’re not rushing, and you can fully enjoy your day. And making sure that you make the most of your day, hitting up all the best spots!
    • Permit and vendor recommendations: I make sure all the logistics are handled smoothly and connect you with trusted vendors!
    • An experience-focused approach: My goal is for your photos to reflect how your day felt, not just how it looked.

I’ve spent countless days exploring Glacier, learning which locations shine at sunrise or sunset, and finding those hidden nooks most visitors never see. That local knowledge means your elopement photos won’t just be beautiful, they will organically feel like you.

Plan Your Own Sun Point Elopement

If you’ve been dreaming about saying your vows surrounded by mountains and golden light, Sun Point might be your perfect spot. It offers that blend of accessibility, beauty, and intimacy that makes elopements in Glacier so special.

You can keep it simple as just the two of you, handwritten vows, and an evening exploring the park. Or you can bring a few close loved ones and celebrate with a private dinner afterward. Either way, Sun Point truly is so stunning!

If you’re ready to start planning your Sun Point elopement, I’d love to help bring it to life.
