Best Places To Get Married In Lake Powell
Lake Powell and Glen Canyon offers a variety of beautiful locations for you to tie the knot. One of the most popular places to get married is on the beach at Lone Rock Beach. This location offers stunning views of the lake and surrounding red rock formations. Other favorites include Horseshoe Bend, Under Canvas Lake Powell, Rainbow Bridge National Monument, Wiregrass Canyon Trail, and Alstrom Point. Keep in mind that some of the locations you will need a high clearance vehicle to get too!
Consider a Houseboat
In addition one of my favorite ways for you to get married at Lake Powell is on a houseboat! This is truly a unique way to get married and I highly recommend! By getting married on a houseboat it is able to transport you to different locations on the lake that other wise would be difficult to get to by land! Lake Powell truly has something for everyone and is perfect for an all day elopement or wedding.
Best Time To Get Married In Lake Powell
You must be wondering when is the best time to get married at Lake Powell? The best time of year to get married at Lake Powell is during the spring or fall season in my opinion!
Spring
In the springtime, you’ll enjoy mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and the beauty of wildflowers in bloom. The weather during this season is ideal for outdoor wedding ceremonies, and you can take advantage of the many water activities offered on the lake such as kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing.
Fall
Fall is another fantastic option, with cooler temperatures, stunning autumnal colors, and a quieter atmosphere. September and October are the best months for a fall wedding at Lake Powell, with the added bonus of being able to witness the breathtaking fall foliage around the lake. Whether you choose spring or fall, you’ll have stunning natural landscapes and comfortable weather to create the perfect backdrop for your wedding day.
Summer
On the other hand, summers on Lake Powell can be hot and crowded, so if you don’t mind the heat and want a livelier atmosphere, this season is also a good option for your wedding! The peak season usually runs from June to August when the lake is bustling with tourists and events. You’ll have more choices for activities and events, and you can take advantage of the long days and warm nights to enjoy the scenery and water sports. Just be sure to plan ahead and book your accommodations and venue well in advance, and keep in mind that the weather can be hot and dry!
How To Avoid Crowds At Lake Powell & Glen Canyon
One thing to note is the lake is a popular destination for tourists, especially during the summer months. However, with a little bit of planning, you can still enjoy getting married with the serene beauty of Lake Powell without the hustle and bustle.
Go in the Shoulder Season
Firstly, consider visiting during the shoulder season, which falls between April to May or September to October. During these months, the weather is mild, and there are fewer tourists around. You’ll have more freedom to explore the lake and the surrounding areas without bumping into crowds.
Venture Off The Beaten Path
Another way to avoid the crowds for your wedding is to venture off the beaten path. Instead of sticking to the popular landmarks and attractions, try exploring lesser-known areas. For instance, hike to the remote corners of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, rent a kayak or a paddleboard and paddle along the shoreline, or take a scenic drive along the Burr Trail. These experiences will allow you to immerse your wedding day in the stunning beauty of Lake Powell while avoiding the crowds. In addition I recommend getting married at sunrise as another way to detour any crowds on your wedding or elopement day!
Lake Powell Water Levels
We all know that Lake Powell has been struggling in term of water levels in recent years. Lake Powell’s water levels are constantly fluctuating, depending on factors such as snowmelt, rainfall, and water usage. The lake serves as a reservoir for the Colorado River, supplying water to millions of people in the southwestern United States. In recent years, however, the water levels in Lake Powell have been lower than usual due to prolonged drought conditions.
The low water levels have had an impact on the recreational activities around the lake, with some boat ramps and marinas being closed or partially open. Despite the challenges presented by the fluctuating water levels, Lake Powell remains a breathtaking destination for your elopement or wedding and I highly recommend it! You and your guest can still enjoy a range of activities such as fishing, hiking, kayaking, and sightseeing while admiring the stunning reddish-orange cliffs and clear blue waters that make Lake Powell so unique.
How To Legally Get Married In Lake Powell
To get married at Lake Powell, you’ll need to obtain a marriage license from the state of Utah or Arizona since the lake is situated on the border of both states. After obtaining the license, you can choose to have a wedding ceremony in one of the many scenic spots around the lake, such as a beach, a houseboat, or a cliff overlooking the water. Keep in mind that if you’re planning to have a wedding on a houseboat, you may need to book well in advance as they can be in high demand during peak season. With its stunning natural beauty and serene ambiance, Lake Powell offers a breathtaking backdrop for a romantic and unforgettable wedding celebration.

The permit includes rules and regulations for the wedding ceremony, such as the number of guests allowed, parking restrictions, and guidelines for the use of equipment like chairs or amplifiers. It’s important to note that wedding permits are only issued during certain times of the year, and peak season dates can book up quickly, so it’s best to plan ahead and secure your permit as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
