Planning a Mountain Wedding

First, a mountain wedding isn’t your average everyday ceremony. There are a few special things you need to think about when planning one, but that’s what makes it so unique. Everything is totally customizable!

Choose the Right Location

First, a mountain wedding isn’t your average everyday ceremony. There are a few special things you need to think about when planning one, but that’s what makes it so unique. Everything is totally customizable!

The mountains are full of amazing locations. You could find rustic mountain lodges with cozy vibes, to off the beaten path trails that make for a one of a kind background. Are you dreaming of a wild, adventurous elopement on a rocky peak? Or a charming, intimate ceremony in a mountain meadow? Or maybe saying your vows in front of an alpine lake? Defining your vision early will make your location choice much easier.

Overall, if you’re overwhelmed with choices, check out National Parks, National Forests or ask your photographer for any hidden gems. They’re stunning, easily accessible, and would truly make for a one of a kind experience. One of my blogs: How to Get Married in a National Park is packed with useful tips if you’re leaning that way.

Consider the Weather (Because Mountains Can Be Unpredictable)

The weather in the mountains can change literally instantly. Bright and sunny mornings can turn into chilly, rainy afternoons, and lightning can be a problem at the top of a mountain. Make sure you have a backup plan. If you’re planning an outdoor ceremony, look for venues that offer a covered or indoor space just in case. You could even rent out a Mountain Airbnb as a second location to say your vows. And don’t forget to consider the weather when planning your wedding outfits.

What to Wear for a Mountain Wedding

Mountain weddings come with their own unique challenges, and opportunities for fashion. You’ll want to look amazing, feel comfortable, and be ready for anything in case of inclement weather.

Brides

For your dress, I would recommend choosing a style that is mountain approved. Think dreamy, yet practical. Lightweight material is ideal because they flow so beautifully in the wind and are easy to move in. However, absolutely wear whatever you have dreamt of! For footwear, I would highly consider wearing hiking boots especially if your location requires a bit of a walk. You can always change into your heels when you get to your ceremony site. And don’t forget your veil! Veils are so incredibly stunning on a mountain when they catch the wind. Veils are another thing you can add and take off for your convenience.

Grooms

Mountain weddings are your chance to break free from a classic tux and explore some modern, rugged options. Lightweight suits in breathable fabrics like linen or wool blends are perfect for staying comfortable through the day. Neutral tones like tan, brown, or hunter green complement the natural surroundings and look amazing against a mountain backdrop. Consider leather hiking boots practical for the terrain. You can always change into a dress shoe at your ceremony spot.

Accessories

  • For Brides: Keep jewelry simple to avoid tangling (especially with wind) and bring practical items like leggings to wear under your dress if its cold. Don’t forget to bring touch ups for your makeup.
  • For Grooms: Bowties, suspenders, or a nature inspired tie pair perfectly with a casual mountain aesthetic.
  • Layers: It could be chilly in the mountains, bring a jacket, or gloves just in case!

Hire Vendors with Mountain Experience

Trust me on this one. You’ll want vendors that know the challenges and ins and outs of mountain weddings. Catering teams need to understand how to keep food fresh at higher altitudes, and photographers (like myself) should know how to use the light and landscape to make your photos so dreamy. Ask potential vendors about their experience in mountain settings when you’re exploring your options.

Important Things to Know About Mountain Weddings

Mountain weddings are romantic and dreamy, but they come with their own set of challenges. Knowing what to expect can save you from any big surprises.

1. Altitude Matters

Altitude sickness can surprise you or your guests. It’s not super common, but it can happen, especially if you or your guests aren’t used to high elevations. Go easy on yourself and your loved ones. Plan some time to acclimate before your big day and keep lots of water on hand.

2. Accessibility is Key

Not all your guests will be down for a hike to a ceremony site, so choose a location that works for everyone, or offer transportation for those who need it. Will your grandparents and family members be able to hike up a mountain? If you’re going super remote, make sure you have a solid plan for getting essentials (like flowers, decor, and even your dress!) safely to the site.

3. Wildlife is Real

Don’t forget about the local wildlife. While the idea of a deer or bear being in your ceremony photos might sound adorable, you’ll want to avoid confronting them. Your wedding will be in their home environment. Prepare to keep your distance and secure your food and decorations, you won’t want any potential safety concerns!

Reasons to Consider a Mountain Wedding

If you need more convincing on how to get married in the mountains here are some additional reasons:

  • Breathtaking Views: Snow-capped peaks, the best sunsets, wildflower meadows…the mountains bring all the scenery. And your wedding photos will be next-level gorgeous.
  • Intimate Vibes: Whether you’re planning a big party or an elopement, the secluded and personal feel of the mountains makes everything extra special and romantic.
  • Amazing Adventures: Want to go for a sunrise hike as newlyweds? Or end the night by roasting marshmallows under the stars? A mountain setting makes it all possible. It’s your wedding and you should totally do what you dream of.
  • Built-In Decor: Mother Nature really outdoes herself here. You won’t need many added decorations to make the setting stunning. Usually a bouquet and some chairs for guests is all you need!

Inviting Guests to Your Mountain Wedding

Your guests are going to need a little extra information to make sure they’re prepared for your mountain adventure. Here’s how to keep them in the loop.

Communicate Early and Often

From the save the dates to your wedding website, make sure to highlight any unique details about your location. Mention the altitude, weather, and what they should pack (comfortable shoes, layers, sunscreen, and anything else!)

If your location involves a bit of a hike, share clear directions and parking info. You may not have great cell reception, and no one wants to feel like they’ve been sent on a scavenger hunt right before your wedding.

Help Them with Logistics

Consider blocking hotel rooms nearby or offering recommendations for cabins and Airbnb rentals. A lot of mountain towns can book up very quickly, especially during peak wedding seasons, so encourage your guests to make reservations as early as possible.

Best Time of Year for a Mountain Wedding

One of the biggest perks of mountain weddings is that they’re incredible year-round. Each season comes with its own unique pros and cons, but here’s a quick rundown to help you decide what’s right for you.

Spring

Mountains with waterfalls and streams are perfect this time of year. The water is flowing rapidly from the melting snow. But, keep in mind that snow might still be present in higher elevations (which is magical), but it can be unpredictable in terms of weather.

Summer

Summer’s the most reliable option for clear skies and warm weather. It’s also easier to access higher-elevation spots in this season. This is the wildflower season in a lot of spots. Just be prepared for some potential crowds in popular areas.

Fall

Fall weddings in the mountains? So moody and colorful. Think vivid reds, oranges, and yellows from the changing leaves. Plus, the cooler temps make it more comfortable for an outdoor wedding.

Winter

If your vision is of a winter wonderland wedding, this is the season for you. Snow makes everything look extra romantic, but it can get really REALLY chilly, so layer up! Also, travel might be trickier, with the potential for snow covered and icy roads, so plan accordingly.

Permits for Your Mountain Wedding

Okay, so this might not be the most exciting part of planning, but it’s so important. If you’re getting married on public land, like in a national park, you’re likely going to need permits. Every location has its own rules, so check with park officials or local authorities early on. Permits aren’t just about following the rules, they’re about preserving the land you’re celebrating on. The goal is to allow future couples to enjoy these beautiful places, too!

A Few Bonus Tips

  • Plan Your Timeline Wisely: Mountain lighting changes fast! The golden hour light you see in Instagram photos is stunning, but it’s also brief. Work with your photographer to plan your timeline, so you don’t miss those dreamy moments.
  • Have a Day-Of Coordinator: This can be a lifesaver, especially in a mountain setting where logistics are trickier. They handle the details so you can just relax and enjoy your day.
  • Don’t Forget to Pack Essentials: From bug spray to warm blankets for your guests, list out all the “just in case” items you’ll need. Better to have them than to wish you did!
